Mount Athos has been drifting in the 2013 Melbourne Cup betting odds prior to today’s race, which will take place at 3pm (AEDT).
The six-year-old opened as low as $7.50 when the final field was announced and was equal favourite with Fiorente.
However, that all changed when the barrier draw was conducted and he receive barrier 22 out of 24 for the race.
Mount Athos has now drifted into odds of $10 at Ladbrokes.com.au and an incredible $20 in their Double The Odds markets.
The six-year-old has won eight of his 26 race starts in total and has earned just shy of $500,000 in prize money during his career.
Mount Athos placed second in the Listed March Stakes at Goodwood in England last start and will be having his first run in Australia when he lines up for today’s race.
The six-year-old is trained by Luca Cumani and will be partnered by jockey Craig Williams in the 2013 Melbourne Cup.
Despite his wide barrier draw, owner Dr Marwan Koukash is confident Mount Athos can win.
”Many people seem to think our draw is bad. I don’t think so,” he said.
”We will bloody win.”
Fiorente remains the Melbourne Cup 2013 betting favourite at odds of $14 with Double The Odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, while Dandino is on the third line of betting at $24.
