Complete 2013 Melbourne Cup Results – Finishing Order

Fiorente has won the $6 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse today November 5, 2013.

The five-year-old burst through the pack to win the 2013 Melbourne Cup by close to a length ahead of a gutsy Red Cadeaux, who placed in second.

It was the second time in three years that Red Cadeaux finished second, after being pipped at the post by Dunaden in the closest Melbourne Cup photo finish in 2011.

Mount Athos battled on for third position, while Simenon passed the post in fourth position.

Fiorente came of a fantastic third placing in the Group 1 Cox Plate last start and was too good for the other 24 horses in the field.

The win proved the first for trainer Gai Waterhouse, who has finished second on two previous occasions.

The most recent second was with Fiorente in last year’s edition of the Cup in what was his first Australia race start.

Barrier five has proved to be a lucky barrier, with Green Moon having won from the same gate just 12 months ago.

Jockey Damien Oliver was over the moon to claim the Melbourne Cup for the first time since Media Puzzle won in 2002.

“It’s a dream come true,” Oliver said.

“There’s a lot of emotions going through my body right now.

“I’m so wrapped that I can be part of Gai’s first one.

“I can’t thank her enough. We’ve been a great team together.”

Oliver admitted he had been confident all along going into the 2013 Melbourne Cup.

“It was amazing,” he said.

“I’ve been really excited about riding this horse and trying to keep a lid on it.

“It was just a matter of holding them off and he was too strong.

“It’s just an amazing race and I just couldn’t be more happy to win it again.”

Trainer Gai Waterhouse couldn’t contain her excitement after watching Fiorente sprint to the lead and hand her her first Melbourne Cup title.

“Didn’t (Oliver) ride him a treat?” Waterhouse said.

“It was quite a solidly run race.

“It was just fantastic.

“I’m so thrilled for all the owners.”

Simenon placed an impressive fourth in the 2013 Melbourne Cup after just one previous Australian run in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes, where he placed in third.

The best of the Australian bred horses was Fawkner, who placed in sixth, while Ethiopia put in a tremendous run to place in seventh position.
