There’s no secret to picking the winning Melbourne Cup 2013 quinella this Tuesday, but the Races.com.au think they might have narrowed down the top two chances in the ‘race that stops a nation’.
Twenty-four of the world’s best staying types are set to face off in one hell of a two-mile showdown for this year’s $6 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).
The traditional Melbourne Cup time is set for 3:00pm (AEST) when the field jumps as Flemington Race 7 and you’ll want to get your bets down before them to ensure you have something to cheer for whether you are trackside or watching from home.
There may be nine overseas-trained raiders out to steal the ‘Loving Trophy’ from Aussie shores and become the sixth internationally-prepared Melbourne Cup winner, but it is Gai Waterhouse’s import Fioretne leading betting.
Over the past few days there have been plenty of reshuffles in the Melbourne Cup betting markets, but one horse has stayed steady at the top with Fiorente a firming $7 favourite.
But is last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up, last seen finishing a brave Cox Plate third under weight-for-age conditions at Moonee Valley, part of our Melbourne Cup quinella tip?
2013 Melbourne Cup Quinella Tip
To Win: #10 Fawkner
In Second: #4 Sea Moon
We are tipping an all Lloyd Williams-owned Melbourne Cup one-two this year with the goliath owner’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner to defeat another last start winner in Sea Moon.
The Melbourne Cup form guide and history says that last start winners are the ones to watch with 11 of the past 19 winners having taken out their final lead-up.
Reset six-year-old Fawkner did that in terrific style on October 19 taking out the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m).
There were pre-race queries there that the six-year-old wouldn’t go the distance, but they handled the mile and a half without issue looking like they had plenty left in the tank to stretch it to the Melbourne Cup’s 3200m.
They’ll get every chance from barrier eight and the money has been steady for them as they are now at $16 or $32 in the double the Melbourne Cup odds markets to become the 12th horse in history to complete the Caulfield / Melbourne Cups double.
Sea Moon meanwhile is another of Williams’ six 2013 Melbourne Cup runners, and is at a slightly shorter $14 for the win.
They jump one inside of Fawkner from barrier seven, and while statistics say only one Melbourne Cup winner has done it from that gate, Sea Moon is not without their claims of making it two.
They won the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) last start and should have fresh legs for this as they look to get back to their earlier career European form that included a Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2400m) win at Ascot in June of 2012 where they defeated the 2011 Melbourne Cup quinella – Duanden and Red Cadeaux – both of who are also back this year.
