Novelty 2013 Melbourne Cup Odds & Markets

We all want the tip for the Melbourne Cup 2013 winner in Flemington Race 7 this Tuesday, but there’s a host of other fun Melbourne Cup betting markets to get in on outside of just the win and place odds to make this Cup Day your best yet!

Mount Athos

All our Melbourne Cup betting on the $6 million two-mile handicap this year is going to be done in one place, online at, as they’re the only bookie in the country offering ‘Double The Odds’ on the fixed win markets for the full 24-horse field.

But to spice things up and make sure we don’t have all our eggs in one bag this Melbourne Cup Day, we’re also going to take up on some of their novelty Cup markets.

Australia v The World

There are nine internationally-trained raiders in this year’s Melbourne Cup field looking to steal the ‘Loving Trophy’ from Aussie shores.

Connections wouldn’t be paying to have their horses come all the way over and fork out the money if they weren’t rated some kind of chance, so it’s going to be interesting.

Think Australia can keep the Cup at home? Take them a $2 or get $1.78 for any Melbourne Cup winner whose trainer’s stable is outside of oz!

Lloyd & Gai vs The Rest

When looking over the Melbourne Cup field it becomes apparent that owner Lloyd Williams (trainer Robert Hickmott) and rival trainer Gai Waterhouse are playing a strong hand in the ‘race that stops a nation’.

Williams has six runners, that’s a quarter of the field, while Waterhosue saddles up the favouite #6 Fiorente as well as exciting French import #22 Tres Blue.

Think either a Williams-owned or Waterhouse-trained runner will win? Get $2.60 on that Melbourne Cup result. Or get the rest of the field at $1.50.

1st Lloyd Runner Home

Of Williams’ six Melbourne Cup starters the best fancied in the standard Melbourne Cup markets is his Herbert Power Stakes winner Sea Moon ($14).

But it’s a stellar line-up this year and there are 23 others in the mix, including five of their top stablemates such as Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner ($18) and The Metropolitan champ Seville ($16).

So instead of risking taking one of them in the open field, get them in these markets for a shortened but safer price to finish the best of the sextet.

1st International Home

Fancy one of the nine internationals in this year’s Melbourne Cup field to become the sixth overseas-trained Melbourne Cup winner?

Each year the international presence and class of competitors grows and this year there’s some true stars in the mix including the Luca Cumani-trained Mount Athos who is $9.50 second pick in the open markets, Caulfield Cup runner-up Dandino who is the early market mover and French mare Verema.

Instead of taking them to win overall, why not back which international you think will finish best of the raiders, just another way to add interest to this year’s Melbourne Cup finishing order!

1st Australian Home

  • Favourite: Fiorente $3.80

Same as the internationals but with the Australian-trained runners, including imports and those yet to race down under for their new Oz stables such as Waterhouse’s Tres Blue ($11).

Favourite is obviously the same as the open market with Tres Blue’s stablemate Fioretne ($3.80) who has been racing here now for a full year after a second in last year’s Melbourne Cup on debut.

Top 10 & Top 5

It’s like the footy season all over again! Back the horse or horses you fancy to finish Top 10 and win some of that juicy $6 million in Melbourne Cup prize money, or Top 5 in the big race of the year.

Melbourne Cup Horses Head-to-Head

There’s then a host of markets that pit two selected horses from the field up against each other so you can back which of the two you fancy to finish ahead of the other.

Examples are:

  • Green Moon ($1.30) v Sea Moon ($3.50)
  • Fiorente ($1.20) v Fawkner ($4.40)
  • Voluese De Coeurs ($1.82) v Tres Blue ($1.95)
