Money is coming in for Rob Heathcote’s Brisbane-based mare Fire Up Fifi to score an upset Myer Classic 2013 result at Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day this afternoon.
Earlier in the week punters could get the recent Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m) winner at $7.50 to improve on her last start fifth to the Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) and win the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
She meets Tattersall’s Tiara champ Red Tracer again today, Waller’s class mare the easing Myer Classic favourite.
However there is a hint of an upset in the air for the mares-only classic with Bradbury’s Luck grey Fire Up Fifi now into $6.50.
Red Tracer, out wide in barrier 10 (of 14), meanwhile has come out from $2.10 to $2.80 to score her second Group 1 title.
The only other mare rated a single-figure chance in this year’s Myer Classic, a race won by 40-1 outsider Appearance 12 months ago, is then Nadeem five-year-old Sharnee Rose.
Like Fire Up Fifi there has been some love for this Kris Lees-trained mare who is in top form having won her last two on the trot in Sydney.
Most recently seen taking out the Group 3 Angst Stakes over the mile on October 12, Sharnee Rose has earned her spot in the Melbourne Group 1 field and has been backed in from $9.50 to $9 to win.
Other notable hopes and their price fluctuations then include:
- Catkins ($12 into $11) – Money coming for Waller’s other runner to upset the stablemate as was the case with the Guy Walter-trained Appearance and defeated favourite Appearance in this race last year, form is there too with Catkins coming off a win in the Tesio Stakes over the Moonee Valley mile just last Saturday
- Floria (Steady at $13) – Peter Moody-trained Savabeel six-year-old was third in the Tattersall’s Tiara to Red Tracer in the winter, has had one run this time in with third to British General at Caulfield on Guineas Day, going up in distance and back to her own gender here puts her in the mix
- Zonza ($14 into $13) – Daughter of Zabeel has won opening two starts this time in, most recently on Thousand Guineas Day in the Ladies’ Day Vase (1600m), mile is a good place for the New Zealand expat to be and she should like Flemington too
- Molto Bene ($18 out to $20) – Visiting Adelaide mare prepared by Phillip Stokes in Morphetville, back-to-back winner, including one over British General at Flemington two back, earlier this prep but needs to improve on a disappointing Tristarc 10th
