Jet Away has missed his opportunity to run in the 2013 Melbourne Cup after finishing sixth in the Mackinnon Stakes today.
The Mackinnon Stakes offers ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup for the winner, allowing those horses low down on the ballot order to sneak into the field.
Jet Away was, and remains, 29thon the order of entry after non-acceptor Silent Achiever is taken out of the equation.
The six-year-old placed a promising fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup last start, however, failed to come on in today’s Mackinnon Stakes.
Jet Away has won eight of his 22 race starts and has earned more than $500,000 in prize money during his career.
The Mackinnon was won by Side Glance, who is not nominated for the Melbourne Cup and will not be making use of the automatic entry into the field.
The fact that Jet Away will miss a start will also mean that top jockey Glen Boss will be left without a Melbourne Cup ride.
When his first prospect, Puissance De Lune, failed to impress this spring, he pinned his hopes on Jet Away to get him into the race.
With Lexus Stakes winner Ruscello being a late acceptor in the field, Glen Boss was offered the ride but he chose not to accept.
Apprentice jockey and recent Cox Plate winner Chad Schofield will be given the Melbourne Cup ride.
