Brenton Avdulla To Ride Mourayan In 2013 Melbourne Cup

Jockey Brenton Avdulla has been given the task of riding Mourayan in the 2013 Melbourne Cup at Flemington next Tuesday.

Despite having never ridden the horse before, Avdulla was contacted by Lloyd Williams via text message to give him the good news.

The message simply said: “Mourayan. Two-miler. Thanks.”

Avdulla is over the moon with the prospect of riding Mourayan, who he thinks is a big chance of winning the $6 million Melbourne Cup.

“I was committed to Waldpark for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup, but after he went amiss at Caulfield, I was forced to look elsewhere,” Avdulla said.

“I’ve kept in contact with Lloyd, and he was the first one I messaged.

“He told me to sit and wait and see what happens. I only got the ride confirmed today.

“To get a Cup ride for Lloyd is a big thrill.”

Mourayan has only had two race starts this spring carnival, with his most recent being in the Group 1 Metropolitan on October 5 when he placed eighth of 14 runners.

Avdulla will get his only chance to sit aboard Mourayan prior to the Cup when he rides him in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes in the next race at Flemington.

Mourayan, who placed a gutsy seventh in last year’s Melbourne Cup, has won five of his 40 race starts in total and has earned more than $1.55 million in prize money.
