2013 Myer Classic Field of 14 Announced

Fourteen lovely mares are engaged to face off in the Myer Classic 2013 field at Flemington Racecourse on Victoria Derby Day this Saturday, November 2, the sure-to-be favourite of which is Chris Waller’s Red Tracer.

Last start winner of the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) by an easy three lengths on Caulfield Cup Day, the Dane Shadow six-year-old runs in her second straight $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) having run a disappointing 10th to Appearance last Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Waller is confident her form is better this time round however, Red Tracer drawn in gate 10 with Nash Rawiller to ride.

Red Tracer broke her Group 1 maiden during the winter in Brisbane winning the Tattersall’s Tiara over the 1400m at Eagle Farm, Waller’s confidence in her growing this week after she worked impressively in a track gallop.

“She’s just a freak,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“She’s gotten better with age, she’s always gone as fast on dry ground and wet, but now she’s just faster overall.”

History is against the Myer Classic favourite however with Red Tracer out to become just the second last-start winner to take out the classic joining Typhoon Tracy (2009).

Waller will be dually represented in the Myer Classic field this year having also accepted for Catkins one outside their stablemate in barrier 11.

The four-year-old Dubawi grey will be out to break the same last-start winners’ hoodoo as she too won her lead-up run taking out the Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley just last Saturday.

There are then two other last-start winners in the same boat with the Kris Lees-trained Sharnee Rose (barrier five) and Roger JamesZonza (barrier two) both after their third on the trot.

Nadeem mare Sharnee Rose actually got the better of Red Tracer two starts back when the pair ran the quinella in the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill.

She then went on to win the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 12, Less hoping she can be competitive again and get the same result over the favourite on Saturday.

“I’m confident that Sharnee Rose will run very well but I’ve got a huge respect for Red Tracer,” he told Racing Victoria.

“The way she won the other day I think she’ll be hard to beat but I’m very pleased with our mare.

“She’s come through her last run really well and she handled the step up the mile which was our only concern.”

As for Zabeel mare Zonza, the New Zealand-bred five-year-old comes off a Thousand Guineas Day win in the Ladies’ Day Vase at Caulfield and steps right up in class for this.

Other notable Myer Classic final acceptors then include the Rob Heathcote-trained recent Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes winner at the track Fire Up Fifi in barrier one, Ladies’ Day Vase runner-up Bonaria, Tristarc Stakes third placed Ava’s Delight, the Peter Moody-trained Tattersalls Tiara third placegetter Floria second-up for the season and Peter Snowden’s Cameo coming off a Tesio Stakes third from Cox Plate Day.
