One of the eight internationals set to go straight into the Melbourne Cup 2013 field Tuesday week without a previous run this spring on Aussie soil, Mount Athos has firmed into second favouritism for the ‘race that stops a nation’ following this morning’s second declarations.
2013 Melbourne Cup second declarations for the $6.2 million, Group 1, two-mile Flemington classic were taken by Racing Victoria today leaving 47 hopefuls.
Favourite of those, and one of four for top Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse, is Irish import Fiorente now paying $6 to hand Waterhouse her first Melbourne Cup trophy.
The Monsun six-year-old has been in flying form this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival to earn top spot in Melbourne Cup betting.
Winner of the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) back in September the stallion was an eye-catching third on the weekend behind history’s first maiden Cox Plate winner Shamus Award in the weight-for-age classic.
That run saw them firm in their price to win Flemington Race 7 on November 5.
Waterhouse’s other Melbourne Cup 2013 hopes are then Queensland Oaks third placegetter Vaquera ($151), Julienas ($81) who ran dead last in the Caulfield Cup and Tres Blue ($26).
Vaquera (41st) and Julienas (34th) are unlikely to make the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field sitting well down the order of entry but Tres Blue, yet to race down under, is guaranteed a run sitting 10th on the Melbourne Cup ballot.
The Anabaa Blue stallion, runner-up to Lucky Speed in the German Derby this July, was last seen running at Deauville in August when winning back-to-back 2500m races at the track.
Also yet to have a start on Australian shores this season is second favourite in the Melbourne Cup markets, the Luca Cumani-trained Montjeu gelding Mount Athos.
After the Cox Plate result on Saturday the European raider was the $10 third pick for the Cup but has since firmed into $9 second favouritism to improve on their Melbourne Cup fifth to Green Moon 12 months ago.
Previous second pick Dandino, runner-up to Fawkner in the Caulfield Cup in their Australian debut this month, meanwhile has eased out from $8 to $12.
Marco Botti’s seven-year-old USA St Leger winner sits just ahead of the Lloyd Williams-owned Sea Moon ($13), the Alain de Royer Dupre-trained Prix Kergorlay winner Verema ($13) and Michael Moroney’s imported Irish St Leger champ Voleuse De Coeurs ($13).
The next best in betting at $14 each are then The Metropolitan winner Seville who ran seventh in the Cox Plate, Jet Away and Hawkspur.
David Hayes’ import Jet Away (30th) must still earn their Melbourne Cup start by winning the $1 million Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day this Saturday.
In their bid to do just that they will be ridden by triple Melbourne Cup winning hoop Glen Boss who is free to ride them on Melbourne Cup Day too following the withdrawal of injured Cox Plate failure Puissance De Lune.
Hawkspur meanwhile is one of five horses still on the Melbourne Cup path for Chris Waller.
Waller is considering bypassing the Mackinnon Stakes with the Queensland Derby winner and going straight to the Cup, Hawkspur ninth on the Melbourne Cup ballot.
Waller’s other hopes are then Foreteller ($31) who runs in the Mackinnon but is only a five percent chance of backing up three days later, Kelinni ($61) who ran fourth in the Melbourne Cup last year, Moriarty ($31) and $301 roughie of the Cup Opinion.
The only other horse under $20 is then Godolphin’s Royal Empire ($18).
Another overseas visitor Brown Panther is then at $21, with two other $26 chances equal with Tres Blue for Waterhouse, Simenon and the defending Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon ($26).
