Savvy Nature Derby Bound After 2013 Mitchelton Wines Vase Victory

Savvy Nature has won the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase at Moonee Valley Racecourse today October 26, 2013.

The Savabeel gelding looked uncomfortable throughout the run, however, let down perfectly down the final straight to claim victory by three lengths.

Savvy Nature has now won three of his seven race starts and has earned more than $330,000 in prize money during his short career.

Outside chance All Rigged Up placed second in the 2013 Mitchelton Wines Vase, while Pinstripe Lane rounded out the first three in third.

Trainer John O’Shea is hopeful Savvy Nature can now go on and produce a similar result in next weekend’s Group 1 Victoria Derby.

“He’s got the job done,” said O’Shea.

“He’s had a nice gallop.

“This race traditionally has been a great guide to the Derby.

“He relaxed good, all the right things you want to see for next week.

“This will just top him off.”

O’Shea admitted that Savvy Nature will need to continue to improve in order to beat Complacent in the 2013 Victoria Derby.

“We’ll be competitive with him but we definitely need to find a length and a half,” he said.

Managing owner Max Whitby believes that we haven’t seen the best of Savvy Nature just yet.

“I was so proud of his father (Savabeel) and he’s on the same track,”Whitby said.

“This horse could do anything next season.”

James McDonald was the jockey aboard Savvy Nature in today’s 2013 Mitchelton Wines Vase, and will also partner him in the Derby.

“He did a lot wrong. He didn’t get round the course real well,” McDonald said of today’s run.

“Lucky I was on a good horse to get away with it.

“I knew this was a key lead up into the Derby and we’re full steam ahead now.

“He’s got a lot to learn and hopefully he’ll get away with it in the Derby.”
