Updated Melbourne Cup Order Of Entry – Ibicenco Receives 1kg Penalty

OTI Racing-owned Ibicenco has received a one kilogram penalty for the 2013 Melbourne Cup after his grinding victory in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) yesterday.

Ibicenco was on the second line of Geelong Cup betting markets but was too strong in the final stages of the race for a brave Verdant; with the leading pair clearing away from the rest of the field that included well-tried favourite Forgotten Voice who finished a disappointing fifth.

The Peter Moody-trained gelding is still not assured of gaining a start in the 2013 Melbourne Cup field but has climbed above a number of talented stayers, such as Forgotten Voice, Jet Away and My Quest For Peace, to be 35th in the Melbourne Cup order of entry with a weight of 53kg.

There were calls for Ibicenco not to be awarded a penalty for his Geelong Cup victory, with a number of racing experts claiming that the field was not strong enough to warrant a penalty, but Racing Victoria Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter believed that the son of Shirocco deserved a penalty for his strong staying performance.

“Ibicenco underlined his staying ability by proving too strong at the finish of yesterday’s Geelong Cup that was run in testing conditions,” Carpenter told Racing Victoria.

“There was a significant margin back to Moudre in third place and with the 1kg penalty Ibicenco moves 0.5kg above Moudre (52.5kg) in the handicap having beaten him at level weights yesterday.

“The record of Geelong Cup winners has been outstanding in recent years in the Melbourne Cup with the three winners and two runners-up from the last eight to contest the race.”

Media Puzzle (2002), Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011)  all went on to win the Melbourne Cup after receiving a penalty for winning the Geelong Cup but last year’s winner Gatewood was unable to earn a start in the field – despite being given a one kilogram penalty.
