One of the last Melbourne Cup trials will run in Victoria today with a number of outside Flemington hopes looking to sneak into contention for the world’s richest handicap with a win in the Geelong Cup 2013.
Running as Geelong Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST) this year’s $300,000 Group 3 Sportingbet Geelong Cup (2400m) originally drew a final field of 10 hopes.
That number is now down to nine however after the early scratching of the Robert Hickmott-trained Tanby (barrier three) who was equal 58kg topweight with Forgotten Voice.
Nicky Henderson’s Irish raider Forgotten Voice meanwhile is the firming $2.25 favourite in Geelong Cup betting for this afternoon’s feature.
A gun sprinter – miler during their younger years, the Danehill Dancer gelding spent over 130 weeks sidelined over their career due to ongoing leg issues.
Recently they’ve been making a mark in Europe’s hurdle scene and were last seen winning the Group 3 Glorious Stakes (2414m) at Goodwood in early August.
They travelled down under with an eye on the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) and are now fighting to make the field sitting 39th on the order of entry for the November 5 classic.
As a nine-year-old with only 52.5kg in the Melbourne Cup weights however they must win today’s Geelong Classic and earn a penalty to be any chance of lining up in the ‘race that stops a nation’.
The other more notable hopes in the Geelong Cup 2013 field this year then include the Peter Moody-trained Ibicenco ($6) who is probably looking more for the two miles, the Robert Smerdon-trained Verdant ($7.50), the rails-drawn Moudre ($9) who will relish a soft track and the in-form Crafty Cruiser ($9) representing the local hopes.
In a relatively open field and market it can be hard to separate the pretenders from the genuine contenders.
