2013 Victoria Derby First Declarations Leave 24

The number of three-year-olds heading towards a run in Saturday’s weeks Victoria Derby 2013 on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington has been cut to 24 after Racing Victoria took first acceptances for the classic today.

There were no major omissions from the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m), set to run on November 2, with the top 10 in nomination betting all accepted for today.

Current Victoria Derby betting markets feature a logjam of youngsters vying for top spot with five of the 24 first acceptors, down from 88 at nomination stage last month, with the narrow favourite being Complacent.

The Peter Snowden-trained Authorized colt has won their past three on the trot, including the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) – Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) double.

Their main rivals are then perceived to be:

  • San Diego (Peter Snowden) – Another Darley-owned colt, this one by Exceed And Excel, comes off some decent spring form most recently running second in the Norman Robinson Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield
  • Polanski (Robbie Laing) – Robbie Laing’s Norman Robinson Stakes winner also took at the Super Impose Stakes over 1800m the start before at Flemington, stepping up to the plate each time they’re challenged
  • Savvy Nature (John O’Shea) – Savabeel gelding won the Spring Stakes over the Newcastle mile to enter spring calculations, next start was second to Complacent in the Gloaming and then they were a credible Spring Champion Stakes third last time out
  • Criterion (David Payne) – Sebring colt improved on a Golden Rose 11th to finish runner-up in the Stan Fox Stakes last month before relishing the step up to 2000m in the Spring Champion Stakes where only Complacent beat them home in the Sydney Group 1

Just outside of the single-figure fancies in first declaration Victoria Derby odds are then the likes of the third Snowden-trained acceptor Tupac Amaru and Anthony Cummings’ Gloaming Stakes third placed Drago.

The untapped Tupac Amaru will get their chance to improve their Victoria Derby claims when racing in Wednesday’s Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) on Geelong Cup Day.

A number of these Victoria Derby hopes will face off at Moonee Valley on Saturday in the $220,000 Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040m).

The top Vase nominees among the Victoria Derby first acceptances are the favourite Complacent, Savvy Nature and Drago.

While Snowden has a strong three-horse Derby contingent he did not accept for Caulfield Guineas winner Long John who instead faces an acid test this weekend in the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Other Victoria Derby non-acceptors include Caulfield Guineas fourth placegetter Dissident, Prince Harada, Adelaide raider Hucklebuck and New Zealander Orion.

See below for the full list of Victoria Derby 2013 first acceptors with the final field to be released on October 30 at 10:00am (AEST).
