2013 Crown Oaks First Acceptances – Guelph & Gregers Out

First acceptances for a number of the Melbourne Cup Carnival Group 1’s were taken by Racing Victoria today including those for the Crown Oaks 2013 where star fillies Guelph and Gregers were the most notable omissions.

Running on Thursday November 7 on day three of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival, this year’s $1 million Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks (2500m) drew 51 three-year-old fillies at nomination stage last month.

That number is now down to just 18 with a number of high profile non-acceptors at first declaration stage today.

The big name defector was the Peter Snowden-trained Guelph who took her Group 1 tally to four last week with an easy win in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Also taken off the Crown Oaks path was Thousand Guineas third placegetter Gregers for trainer David Hayes.

While Snowden and Team Darley are now without a filly in Crown Oaks contention this year, Hayes still has his Edward Manifold runner-up Star Fashion in the mix.

Also withdrawn were Edward Manifold Stakes winner Se Sauver and the Mick Kent-trained Scratchy Bottom who won by over three lengths at Moonee Valley on debut at the start of the month.

May’s Dream and Arabian Gold meanwhile now head the list of hopefuls for this year’s Crown Oaks sitting one-two in the futures markets.

Darren Weir’s New Approach filly May’s Dream earned her spot at the top of the Crown Oaks odds after finishing a brave second to Guelph in the Thousand Guineas, her run there suggesting she’ll be suited to more distance.

If successful May’s Dream will be emulating the Group 1 success of her dam She’s Archie who Weir trained to win the 2002 South Australian Oaks over a decade ago.

Arabian Gold meanwhile has been competitive behind Guelph all season when second in the Tea Rose last month and then fourth in the Flight Stakes over the Rnadwick mile on October 5.

The nicely-bred Dubawi grey’s pedigree says she’ll get more distance, and she proved that with her good win in the Ethereal Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield last Saturday.

The other top Crown Oaks first acceptors then include Ethereal Stakes runner-up Solicit, consistent New Zealand-bred filly Kirramosa, Anthony Cummings’ daughter of Fastnet Rock Wordplay who was fourth in the Thousand Guineas and the progressive Melaleuca for Stawell-based trainer Terry O’Sullivan.

See below for the full list of Crown Oaks first declarations.

The 2013 Crown Oaks final field and barriers are now due for release on Monday November 4 at 9:00am (AEST) and will be published right here so stay tuned.
