Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Nicky Henderson’s British raider and Melbourne Cup-bound galloper Forgotten Voice will make their Australian debut in Victoria this Wednesday racing in the 2013 Geelong Cup.
Often a telling guide to the world’s richest handicap on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington, the $300,000 Group 3 Sportingbet Geelong Cup (2400m) has this year attracted a final field of 10 hopefuls.
While it is up on the diminutive field of seven the race attracted last year, the 10 acceptors is still below the 12 – 14 mark the Geelong Racing Club was hoping for this spring after there were 26 nominations taken last week.
Two horses will carry the equal 58kg top-weight in the Geelong Cup field on Wednesday, one of which is Forgotten Voice in gate six with the Hong Kong-based Brett Prebble in the saddle.
Winning jockey in the Melbourne Cup last year, Prebble will partner with the Danehill Dancer veteran for the first time in the Geelong Cup with Forgotten Voice racing for the first time since early August.
That was a winning run, their second on the trot and eighth from 20 career starts, winning the Group 3 Glorious Stakes (2414m) at the Goodwood in Britain.
A $61 chance for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), Forgotten Voice is currently 38th on the order of entry and hoping to sneak into a top 24 position with a Geelong Cup win.
The other horse with 58kg on Wednesday is then the Robert Hickmott-trained Tanby in barrier three with Steven Arnold to ride.
Tanby has been out of form this season, most recently running dead last to stablemate Sea Moon in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on October 12, an effort they will be out to improve on here.
They are the only Geelong Cup acceptor for Hickmott and owner Lloyd Williams, who snared the Caulfield Cup trophy with Fawkner over the weekend, after originally holding seven nominations.
Two horses then follow in the Geelong Cup field and weights with the Peter Moody-trained Ibicenco (barrier eight) and the rails-drawn Moudre with Craig Williams to ride.
Shirocco six-year-old Ibicenco is actually the shortest-priced of the Geelong Cup hopes in the latest Melbourne Cup odds at a quote of $51.
A first-up winner at Caulfield over 1700m back in august, they were last seen running a disappointing 12th to Seville in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) in Sydney, a return to Melbourne to suit.
Other notable Geelong Cup acceptors then include the Bryce Stanaway-trained Crafty Cruiser coming off a good fourth in the Listed The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington, Pat Carey’s third placegetter from last year’s Geelong Cup Brigantin and the Hawkes-trained Polish Knight.
