Fawkner Cops 1.5kg Penalty for 2013 Melbourne Cup

The winning effort of the Team Williams-owned Fawkner in the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) over the weekend has seen them cop a 1.5 kg weight penalty for the Melbourne Cup 2013 next month.

The Robert Hickmott-trained Reset six-year-old ran the race of their life on Saturday to defeat a smart field including fast finishing European runner-up Dandino by a minimum 1.3 lengths in the mile and a half classic.

Prior to their Caulfield Cup victory Fawkner, runner-up to Happy Trails in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, was allocated 53kg in the Melbourne Cup weights.

They have now shot up to first on the Melbourne Cup ballot and will carry 54.5kg if accepted into the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field on November 5, half a kilo less then they carried to victory in the Caulfield Cup.

“Fawkner was strong on the line in the BMW Caulfield Cup at his first run beyond 2040m and has been penalised 1.5kg in the weights for the Emirates Melbourne Cup for his Group 1 victory,” Racing Victoria Executive General Manager Greg Carpenter explained.

“On the strength of his win on Saturday I see no reason why Fawkner wouldn’t be very competitive in an Emirates Melbourne Cup with 54.5kg, which is 0.5kg less weight than he carried to victory on Saturday, after weights were raised 1.5kg for that race at final acceptance time.”

The penalty is also in line with those awarded to a number of other Caulfield Cup winners in recent years according to Carpenter.

“The 1.5kg penalty is the same afforded to Descarado (2010), Master O’Reilly (2007) and Sky Heights (1999) following their wins in the BMW Caulfield Cup,” he said.

“In the last 20 years only Viewed (1kg in 2009) and Dunaden (1kg in 2012) have received lesser penalties.”

It also means that should they both go to the Melbourne Cup Fawkner and the European-trained Dandino, second in the Caulfield Cup on the weekend, will meet equal on the weights; Dandino carried 56.5kg when runner-up on Saturday.

“Both Fawkner and the Marco Botti-trained runner-up Dandino now have 54.5kg in the Emirates Melbourne Cup with Fawkner meeting Dandino and BMW Caulfield Cup third placegetter Dear Demi 1.5kg worse for having beaten them by 1.25 lengths on Saturday,” Carpenter said.

Connections at Macedon Lodge are still weighing up whether they will test Fawkner over the two miles in the Melbourne Cup or give them an easier season finish in the $1 million Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) three days earlier on Victoria Derby Day.

Melbourne Cup betting is currently led by last year’s runner-up Fiorente ($5.50) for trainer Gai Waterhouse, who has 55kg.

Fawkner meanwhile pays a more generous $11 as the third pick in the markets, Dandino the $7 second elect.

If accepted for the Melbourne Cup, Fakwner will be out to become the 12th horse in history to complete the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double.

Over the years 90 Caulfield Cup winners have gone on to run in the famous Flemington race, the most recent of the 11 to succeed being Ethereal (2011) who was penalised two kilos for her Caulfield victory.

There are now nine horses more heavily weighted than Fawkner in the Melbourne Cup weights which are led by 2011 winner Dunaden (58.5kg) and the reigning Melbourne Cup champ Green Moon (57.5kg).
