Derby Favourite Heads 2013 Moonee Valley Vase Nominations

Peter Snowden’s 2013 Victoria Derby favourite Complacent will have their final lead-up to the November 2 feature at Moonee Valley this weekend running in the $220,000 Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040m).

Also known as the Moonee Valley Vase, the three-year-olds set weights race this year drew 12 early entries with nominations for the Cox Plate Day feature extended until Tuesday morning.

Of the current nominees the top-rated by 12 points is in-form Authorized colt Complacent.

The youngster will be vying for their fourth win on the trot if accepted.

They were last seen scoring a brilliant win in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 12, their first look at the distance.

Now they need to prove themselves the other way of going in Melbourne as they head towards a shot at the $1 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Complacent currently heads the early Victoria Derby betting markets at a quote of $5, a price set to shorten should they win the Vase on the weekend.

Last year’s Mitchelton Wines Vase winner was the Mark Kavanagh-trained Super Cool who went on to run a brave second to Fiveandahalfstar in the Derby seven days later.

Second favourite for this year’s Derby at a quote of $7.50 is then Savvy Nature who is also nominated for the Vase.

John O’Shea’s son of Savabeel won the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle last month and has run second and third respectively behind Complacent in their two most recent runs.

The other best fancied Victoria Derby entries who could run on Saturday then include Anthony Cummings’ Danehill Dancer colt Drago ($12), the John Sadler-trained Pinstripe Lane ($14) coming off a fourth in the Super Impose Stakes at Flemington, last start Hill Smith winner in Adelaide Storm Approach ($21) and the David Hayes-trained De Beers gelding Tips And Beers ($26) who has won three of their four starts to date.

See below for the complete Mitchelton Wines Vase 2013 nominations, extended until tomorrow morning, and cut to the final field on Wednesday.
