Polanski Books Derby Ticket With 2013 Norman Robinson Stakes Win

Polanski is on his way to the 2013 Victoria Derby after winning the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse.

The three-year-old won the race after an exciting dual with San Diego down the straight, who placed a strong second.

Epic Saga finished the best of the rest in third position, while Honey Steel’s Goldrounded out the top four.

Polanski has now won three of his eight race starts and has earned more than $268,000 in prize money during his short horse racing career.

The $4,000 purchase has now won two in a row this spring, having claimed the Listed UCI Stakes at Flemington last run.

Trainer Robbie Laing was at the track to witness Polanski’s winning 2013 Norman Robinson Stakes performance.

“His first up run this time up was a ripper,” Laing said.

“His win the other day, I thought it was brave.

“Everyone in the stable knew he’d improve three of four lengths.

“(He’s a) big tough horse.

“(We’ve) just gotta keep him right.

“He looks like a quarter of a million dollar Zabeel horse. He always has really.

“Except for the horse he was disqualified in (Caulfield Handicap in May), he’s got a terrific strike rate.”

Managing owner Rachael Laing is excited at the prospect of winning a Group 1 Victoria Derby with a $4,000 bargain horse.

“I just hope he wins a Derby for us,” she said.

“If you could have seen him at the sales. He was wooly.

“And Rob can just look beyond all that.

“I couldn’t be happier today.”

Jockey Hugh Bowman was having his first ride aboard Polanski in today’s 2013 Norman Robinson Stakes.

“He’s still a big raw horse this fella,” Bowman said.

“He got the wanders a little bit. So I think he can do better.

“If this horse had something another length and a half in front of him he would have run that down.

“He’s an excellent chance in the Derby.

“He’d be a top three pick for sure.

“I’d love to ride him.”
