Gai Waterhouse-trained Spurtonic led all the way to record his first win at Group level in the David Jones Cup (2000m) at Caulfield this afternoon.
Jockey Glen Boss took control of the race on Spurtonic and the son of Flying Spur kicked well clear of the rest of the field to score a very comfortable victory from Bass Strait and Garud.
Waterhouse was delighted with the performance and was quick to pay credit to the exceptionally-timed ride of Boss who will partner Silent Achiever in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) this afternoon.
“It should be exactly like that when you have the right horse and the right jockey,” Waterhouse said.
“Boss was just brilliant, ha gauged it, eased him up when they had gone two furlongs and then he kicked off before the turn so that he could slide into it.
“It was really a joy to watch and he turned around in the final furlong and said see you late alligator.”
Boss said that Spurtonic ran well when he finished fourth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) a fortnight ago but believes the four-year-old is a much better horse when he is stepping up in distance from the mile.
“His form was around a mile and a quarter and I think that going back to a mile he ran courageously but was a bit one-paced in the straight,” Boss said.
“He was never losing ground in that Group 1 at Randwick but his future probably lies over a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half.
“He is a lovely horse to ride, he has great rhythm, relaxes well in races and has a great demeanor , which will take him a long way.
“The best part of the race was the last 150 metres and he really surged through the line so that shows that he has good stamina.
“He pulled up really well, you wouldn’t even know that he went around, so he obviously has a good future.”
Waterhouse is yet to decide on the next race start for Spurtonic during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival but said that a possible tilt at the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) was on the agenda for the talented gelding.
