Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Classy filly Arabian Gold lived up to her form around Thousand Guineas winner Guelph to win the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield this afternoon.
Peter Moody-trained Akagera turned the race into a true staying test by setting a quick tempo from the start and Arabian Gold put to bed any fears that she wouldn’t be able stay out the trip by finishing the race strongly to record a one length win from Solicit and Refer.
Trainer David Vandyke was pleased with the performance of Arabian Gold and said that he was pleased that his decision to bypass the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in favor of today’s race had paid off.
“It was a terrific win, I thought he might have gone a bit soon, but it was a very good tough win,” Vandyke said after the race.
“I was really glad that Guelph won on Wednesday because I wasn’t sure whether to go to the Thousand Guineas or try her at the 2000m today and it looks like it was the right maneuver.
Arabian Gold has been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) but Vandyke remains unconvinced that the Dubawi filly will run out the staying trip and will reassess his plans after she runs in the Group 1 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
“That was a tough staying test and she passed with flying colours,” Vandyke said.
“We will head to the Wakeful in two weeks and reassess from there.
“I was just happy with that pace on; she travelled along comfortably and she was doing it at the right end there.
“I’m concerned about her running 2500, especially at this age, but I can’t see them running along any quicker than they did just then and she is going to have the experience of this run under her belt.
“I won’t go to the Oaks unless I am 100% happy after the Wakeful.”
Jockey Peter Robl is also unsure whether Arabian Gold will be able to run a strong 2500 meters but believes that she may have the class to win the Crown Oaks without properly staying the trip.
“I thought that it was a good win and it was her first try at ten furlongs,” Robl said.
“I thought she sprinted a bit quicker than I thought she was going to and I got there a bit earlier than what I would have liked.
“I’m not really sure about the 2500m for her but we have seen a lot of fillies win the Oaks that can’t stay.
“Hopefully she will falls in that category.”
