Boban has overcome the top-weight of 59.5kg and the outside barrier to win the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this afternoon in the most impressive fashion.
The Epsom Handicap winner was taken straight to the back of the field by jockey Glyn Schofield and at one stage looked as though he had lost contact with the rest of the field; receiving a check coming around the final turn.
Boban got going in the straight and Schofield weaved a path done the inside of the field; with the Bernardini gelding storming home to record an extraordinary win from Strawberry Boy and Galah.
Trainer Chris Waller admitted that he did not think that Boban was a winning chance when he tailed off the end of the field but was delighted with the way the four-year-old accelerated in the final stages of the race.
“I thought Chris you have pulled the wrong rein here dropping him back to 1400m after a tough mile,” Waller said after the race.
“Halfway up the straight I thought ok we are on track for the Emirates but he kept coming so it was a good result.”
Waller confirmed that Boban will have his next start in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on the final day of the 2013 Melbourne Cup Carnival and is confident he can add a second Group 1 victory to his racing resume – even if he will have to carry plenty of weight to do so.
“The downfall is now that we are going to have to carry a bit of weight in the Emirates but on the strength of his form this preparation the most important thing is that he is going to come back a very good horse regardless of where he runs in the Emirates,” Waller said.
“He has confidence now and it just shows you what a bit of experience will do for a horse.”
Schofield said that he was never worried in the run and revealed that the plan was always to take the four-year-old straight to the back of the field.
“It all went according to plan really,” Scholfield said.
“That is pretty much how he won the Epsom so we weren’t going to change anything.
“We knew that we would have to snag him back and let him flop out and find a spot.
“He is learning how to race now and from a better barrier I could have put him anywhere today.
“It is nice to see that even with the big weight of 59.5kg that he was able to rattle home in a really strong performance.”
