Macedon Lodge Team Chasing First Caulfield Cup Win

Co-owner Nick Williams is confident that Fawkner can give the Macedon Lodge team there first ever win in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Fawkner will be the only representative from the Macedon Lodge stable in the 2013 Caulfield Cup.

Lloyd Williams has held the Melbourne Cup aloft on four occasions but his stable of saying talent has never had a great deal of success in the Caulfield Cup – with Green Moon’s unlucky second place finish in 2011 the closest he has come to victory.

It is often said that Lloyd Williams is only in racing to win Melbourne Cups but his son argues that his team would dearly love to add a Caulfield Cup to their collection.

“We haven’t been lucky enough to win it, but would love to because it’s a great race – it’s one of the great races on the Australian calendar,” Williams told Racing Victoria.

“It’s an exceptionally difficult race to win, it’s often a roughhouse affair, and you often heard about a lot of horses who have bad luck in the race.

“We’ve had a lot of Caulfield Cup runners over the years and it’s a very hard race to win.”

The Williams Team had the opportunity to include several well-credentialed stayers in the field for the 2013 Caulfield Cup, including Green Moon, Sea Moon, Masked Marvel and Seville, but elected to have Fawkner as their only runner in the race.

Fawkner has improved in each of his starts this campaign, finishing third in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) despite losing a plate at his last start, but has never previously raced over 2400 metres.

Williams said that the Caulfield Cup has always been the major 2013 Spring Racing Carnival goal for the Reset gelding and he believes that the six-year-old has given every indication in trackwork that he will run out the testing trip.

“You have only got to look at his breeding, which suggests that he’ll get there,” Williams said.

“He’s shown us nothing at home to suggest it’ll be a bridge too far so we’re heading there really confident.

“This has been his target since November last year; it’s his grand final and we think he’ll run very well.”
