One of the two Group 2 support races on the Caulfield Cup Day program this Saturday, the 2013 Caulfield Sprint is shaping up as a speedy showdown between some of the season’s more promising sprinters.
Running as Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEST) the $220,000 Group 2 Perri Cutten Caulfield Sprint (1100m) field is down to 12 hopefuls following the early scratching of #12 Like Bolt.
Narrow favourite in the markets at a quote of $4.60 is the nicely-drawn Chiaramonte in gate two.
Getting in with just 53kg in the handicap clash, Peter Snowden’s in-form Redoute’s Choice four-year-old has been flying this time in and steps up in grade here following their last start third in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m).
In a wide open affair there are sixth other single-figure chances in the Caulfield Sprint odds with dual Group 1 winning mare Platelet ($5.50), in-form Queenslander Spirit Of Boom ($7), the resuming El Magico ($8), Ossenhagen ($8.50) and Pago Rock ($9.50) out wide in barrier 11 of 12.
With so many under $10 in betting it looks a tough task picking the Caulfield Sprint winner in 2013, which is where the Races.com.au crew of expert tipsters come in.
#5 Spirit Of Boom ($7)
Talented Tony Gollan-trained Queenslander has had just the one run at Caulfield, but it was a beauty when finishing a first-up third to Mrs Onassis in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) back in February. Third-up here after two excellent runs. First was a quarter length third in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) in Sydney followed by their Gilgai Stakes second when barrier 10 (of 12) hampered their style. Get the chance to turn the tables on Gilgai winner Platelet here with a gun gate four draw. She also has to carry the 59kg, one kilo more than Spirit Of Boom so lock in the boy!
#11 Chiaramonte ($4.60)
As mentioned above, plenty of evidence why this young stallion is the favourite. Could change before jump time, but they are doing everything right and deserve a shot at this. Has finished out of the money just once in their dozen career starts to date (12-5-6) and come off two good black type minor placings. First was a second to Samaready in the Group 3 at Caulfield over this track and distance, then Testa Rossa third when beaten just have a length over the 1200m here on September 29. Should fly going back 100m again for this. Winner over the 1100m at Canterbury too so looks their pet distance. They carried 58kg there (albeit against lesser class) and only have 53kg here with Kerrin McEvoy riding from a brilliant barrier two draw.
This mare boasts a Group 1 winning double from Adelaide back in the autumn so has the class. She has run two good races this time in, most recently a three quarter length win over Spirit Of Boom in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m). She had 56kg then but goes up to 59kg for this giving a lot of weight away to some top rivals, can she handle that impost?
