Chris Waller-trained Hawkspur remains the favourite in 2013 Caulfield Cup betting markets but continues to drift after drawing an outside barrier yesterday.
The 2013 Queensland Derby winner was as short as $4.20 in some betting markets before the barrier draw yesterday but is now out to $4.80 – despite three of the past four Caulfield Cup winners coming from a double figure gate.
$4.80 may be an accurate price for Hawkspur but that is not the true price that punters at Ladbrokes Australia will be receiving – with the leading online bookie offering Double The Odds (DTO) on every single Caulfield Cup runner this weekend.
Another leading Caulfield Cup contender whose price has continued to drift is European stayer Dandino who will likely end up jumping from barrier 16 this weekend.
The Dansili entire has been well backed since he arrived in Australia, after producing a number of impressive trackwork performances at the International Equine Centre at Werribee, but has now drifted out to Caulfield Cup odds of $8.50 ($17 DTO).
Working in Dandino’s favor is his jockey Craig Williams who knows what it takes to win a Caulfield Cup from a wide alley, having won the 2012 edition of the race with French stayer Dunaden who jumped from barrier 18.
Waller was clearly not thrilled with the poor barrier for Hawkspur but his other major chance Royal Descent drew ideally in barrier three and has been the best backed Caulfield Cup runner in the past 24 hours.
Royal Descent will be stepping up to 2400 metres for the first time since her dominant ten lengths victory in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) during the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and she has performed well in each of her starts this preparation.
The daughter of Redoute’s Choice is now into 2013 Caulfield Cup odds of $6.50 ($13 DTO) and is attempting to become the first mare to win the Australian Oaks and the Caulfield Cup in the same year since How Now in 1976.
Another mare Silent Achiever has also received plenty of support and is now into $8 ($16 DTO) after drawing barrier number five yesterday.
The O’Reilly mare is chasing her first race win for almost a year this weekend but trainer Roger James is very bullish about her chances after she performed strongly in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).
Other Caulfield Cup runners that have received support since the barrier draw are Jet Away ($10), Fawkner ($12), Waldpark ($31) and My Quest For Peace ($34).
