Red Tracer Tops 2013 Tristarc Stakes Field

Sydney’s Chris Waller is looking down the barrel of a successful Caulfield Cup Day in Melbourne on Saturday, including a shot at the Tristarc Stakes 2013 with his Group 1 winning mare Red Tracer.

Waller has a stranglehold over the betting markets for the day’s elite level with two of his four hopes, Hawkspur and Royal Descent, sitting one-two in the Ladbrokes.com.au odds for the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Earlier in the day however the triple premiership winning trainer will look to take out one of the major support races on the card with his talented Dane Shadow six-year-old Red Tracer in the $220,000 Group 2 Yellowglen Tristarc Stakes (1400m).

Twelve months ago Red Tracer came off a first-up win in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) in Sydney to run a brave third behind Streama in the Tristarc.

She’s back in 2013 and is second up again, the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara winner from the winter in Brisbane having resumed with a very close second to Sharnee Rose in the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m).

While Red Tracer, drawn in barrier nine with Nash Rawiller to ride, is the top-rated Tristarc Stakes acceptor she certainly faces a tough field of fellow mares.

A major lead-up to the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on November 2, the Tristarc features a quality line-up of Group 1 hopes including six last start winners.

Three of those six are assured of a start in the race that has drawn a capacity 16 starters plus four emergencies, including the Ken Kelso-trained Xanadu.

Drawn wide in barrier 14, into 11 with the emergencies out, the Elusive City Kiwi was last seen defeating 10time Group 1 champion King Mufhasa back home in the Group 1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) at Hastings on September 21.

The other last start winners looking for successive spring wins include the Peter Snowden-trained Aerobatics (barrier 17) who won over the 1200m here last Saturday, the Phillip Stokes-trained Adelaide raider Molto Bene (barrier 19) and Fire Up Fifi.

Rob Heatchote’s Bradbury’s Luck grey Fire Up Fifi improved on a disappointing first-up run at Rosehill to score an upset in the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m) at Flemington a fortnight ago as a $21 roughie.

She drew barrier 15 (of 16) that day and will relish coming in a little here drawn in gate 10 but coming into eight with the spares withdrawn.

Rose Of Kingston runner-up Peron is also backing up in the Tristarc on Saturday, John Thompson’s in-form Husson four-year-old also having run a first-up second to Driefontein in the Sheraco Stakes.

Peron is drawn to perfection in barrier two and will be ridden by 99-time Group 1 winning hoop Jim Cassidy.

Other notable Tristarc Stakes hopes this year include the John O’Shea-trained Steps In Time, Golden Pendant third placed Bennetta and Chris Waller’s recent How Now Stakes winner (carrying 58kg) Catkins coming off a Rose of Kingston third.
