Epsom Handicap Winner Tips 2013 Moonga Stakes Field

Chris Waller’s Epsom Handicap winner Boban races for the first time since their Group 1 success at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday heading the field for the Moonga Stakes 2013.

The in-form Bernardini four-year-old has won all three of their starts this prep and will be out to make it a quartet on the trot in the $150,000 Group 3 Sportingbet Moonga Stakes (1400m).

Running as Caulfield Cup Day Race 6 at 3:10pm (AEST) on Saturday, this year’s Moonga Stakes features a quality final field of 12 hopefuls.

To wear the number one saddlecloth is Boban drawn in the extreme outside barrier with Glyn Schofield to ride.

Schofield has been aboard for the gelding’s trio of wins this time in including their four length romp in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) and their narrow nose victory over Streama last start in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

Boban was well suited to the handicap conditions of the Epsom when carrying only 53kg and must handle a rise up to 59.5kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions of the Moonga Stakes however.

The other last start winner in the mix is then Hugh Bowman’s mount Out Of Coober, the Bill Smart-trained Adelaide raider having won over the 1400m at Mildura and then Caulfield in their two most recent starts.

In-form Darley trainer Peter Snowden, who snared the Caulfield Guineas (Long John) – Thousand Guineas (Guelph) double this past week, has a double shot at the Moonga on Saturday.

Snowden saddles up his veteran Lonhro eight-year-old Pinwheel (barrier seven) and Galah (barrier six).

Pinwheel, last seen in the winner’s stall at Warwick Farm in August last year, is second up this prep following a lovely resuming run when just half a length away fourth to Arinosa in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick a fortnight ago.

Redoute’s Choice stallion Galah meanwhile won the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm during the winter and is out to improve on their first-up seventh to Platelet in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Other notable hopes in the mix then include Moire Stakes fifth placed Conservatorium and the Peter Moody-trained Strawberry Boy.
