Caulfield Sprint 2013 Final Field Released

While all eyes will be on the last at Caulfield this Saturday with the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) set to steal the show, there are nine earlier races on the program including the 2013 Caulfield Sprint for punters to enjoy.

Running as Caulfield Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEST) this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Perri Cutten Caulfield Sprint (1100m) has drawn an exceptional field of 13 sprinters.

Heading the field and weights with a hefty 59kg impost is the Darren Weir-trained Platelet.

Drawn in gate five with Ben Melham to ride the five-year-old Strategic mare is a dual Group 1 winner already thanks to a winning elite level double in Adelaide last season.

She is also a last-start Flemington winner thanks to a smart effort in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m).

For the Gilgai though Platelet carried just 56kg and must handle a three kilo increase if she is to go back-to-back on the weekend.

Ready to turn the tables on the mare too is Gilgai Stakes runner-up from the Queensland stables of Tony Gollan Spirit Of Boom.

The Sequalo stallion was only just nudged out last start by Platelet and is drawn one on her inside for Saturday’s rematch.

He carried a kilo more than her last start too and will relish having a kilo less in the Sprint.

Spirit Of Boom is one of four horses allocated 58kg in the Caulfield Sprint.

The others are Ricky Maund’s rails-drawn General Truce to be ridden by Damien Oliver, and the Peter Moody-trained resuming duo of Fat Al (barrier three) and Ready To Rip (barrier seven).

Other hopes that come off some nice recent form then include the David Hayes-trained Pago Rock (57kg) out wide in barrier 12 who ran second in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes last Saturday, Dubawi mare Shamal Wind (53kg) with Glen Boss aboard and Peter Snowden’s fellow 53kg lightweight Chiarmonte with an ideal barrier two draw as they look to win their first of the season.

Progressive Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Chiarmonte has been catching the eye this time in, including a second to subsequent Group 1 Moir Stakes winner Samaready in The Heath 1100 in August.

At their latest start Chiaramonte was third in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) on September 29, an effort they’re looking to improve on as they step up in class here.
