2013 Victoria Derby Hopes Head Norman Robinson Stakes Field

A bumper field bursting with Victoria Derby 2013 hopefuls is set to face off at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday in the $150,000 Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m).

Scheduled as the fourth on Caulfield Cup Day at 2:00pm (AEST), this year’s Norman Robinson Stakes field features 13 hopefuls.

More than half of those are heading towards a Flemington run on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Saturday November 2, in the $1 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m).

The shortest-priced of the Victoria Derby bound gallopers using the Norman Robinson as a lead-up this weekend is the Peter Snowden-trained San Diego ($12).

Drawn in the extreme outside gate 13 with Kerrin McEvoy to ride the Exceed And Excel colt comes back in class here after their brave sixth to Divine Calling in the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley last month, an effort they are tipped to improve on as they step up to the 2000m for the first time on the weekend.

The other best in Victoria Derby betting accepted for the Norman Robinson this year are then:

  • Surging Wave ($13) – David Hayes-trained Encosta De Lago gelding broke maiden status at Bendigo three back, most recent run was over 1800m at Flemington when fifth in the Super Impose Stakes showing a liking for extra distance
  • Famechon ($14) – Trainer Michael Moroney has had them earmarked for the Derby all season, showed they were on track for that when third in the Super Impose, but still a maiden so needs to learn how to win
  • Polanski ($15) – Super Impose winner prepared by Cranbourne’s Robbie Laing, son of Rakti should continue to improve as they get more under their feet but not sure if they can hold these improvers off again
  • Epic Saga ($17) – Mathew Elleton’s Real Saga gelding is proving a perennial runner-up coming off three straight second place finishes, most recently in the Super Impose which is obviously going to be the form for this race

Sebring three-year-old Bring Something ($26) who ran fourth in the Stutt Stakes over a mile and Peter Moody’s last start Seymour winner over the 2000m on September Cadillac Mountain ($31) are then at slightly longer Victoria Derby prices, which will change should they score an upset Norman Robinson stakes result on Saturday.
