2013 Caulfield Cup Barrier Draw – Favourites Draw Wide

Favourites Hawkspur and Dandino have both drifted in 2013 Caulfield Cupbetting markets after drawing outside barriers for the $2.5 million event that will be run at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday.

Chelmsford Stakes winner Hawkspur drew barrier 16 (and will likely jump from barrier 14), while European-trained Dandino drew barrier 19; with both likely need a bit of luck to win the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) this weekend.

However, connections of both horses will be able to take solace out of the fact that three of the last four Caulfield Cup winners have started from double figure barriers and leading French stayer Dunaden won the 2012 edition of the race from barrier 18.

While Hawkspur and Dandino will both start the Caulfield Cup from awkward positions, third-favourite Royal Descent will jump from barrier three and her 2013 Caulfield Cup odds have already shortened from $7 into $6.50.

The other big beneficiary of the barrier draw was Silent Achiever (barrier five) who has been one of best- backed runners in Caulfield Cup betting markets in recent days.

Trainer Roger James has been brimming in praise for the New Zealand Derby winner and is confident that she is good enough to give jockey Glen Boss his first ever win in the Caulfield Cup.

“I’ve made no secret about the fact that I am thrilled with her,” James said at the barrier draw.

“I think that I have done my job; she was in good order heading into The BMW in the autumn and I think that she is in better order now.

“Her record is pretty good at a mile and a half and she should be able to get a cosy run.”

Classy mare Dear Demi already has history against her, with no Crown Oaks winner ever going on to win Caulfield Cup the following year, and had her chances impacted when she drew the outsider barrier of the twenty-two horse field.

Dear Demi will jump from barrier 18, after the emergencies are removed, and trainer Clarry Connors said that the draw was not ideal but is glad that the Dehere mare avoided an inside gate.

“It is not the best of draws but we are there so we have to make the best of it,” Connors said.

“I would rather be drawn there than on the fence because she gets back mid-field anyway and at some time or another she is going to have to get out.

“This horse has improved leaps and bounds this preparation and I am very happy with her.”

Imported stayer Jet Away will jump from barrier 13 and will head into the Caulfield Cup with just one run under his belt after missing both the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

Colourful owner Douglas Taylor said that he is not worried about the interrupted preparation and was thrilled with the Cape Cross entire’s run in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

“We are very happy,” Taylor said.

“It was wonderful; I was delighted because I was about to jump on a plane to fly halfway across the world and it was great.

“That is the way that we do it in Europe.”

Fawkner will be the only representative from Macedon Lodge in the Caulfield Cup and will be making his debut over 2400 metres.

Co-owner Nick Williams said that he was happy with barrier twelve and does not believe staying out the trip will be a problem for the Reset gelding.

“It is new ground but we have been training him for it and that has been his target since November last year,” Williams said.

“We had always planned this to be his Grand Final and hopefully he will run well.

“With a little bit of luck he might come into 10, he will certainly come into 11, and from that gate Nick Hall will be able to give the horse every chance.”

Third emergency Ibicenco (barrier 9) was scratched from the Caulfield Cup final field this morning and will now head to the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m); leaving Irish stayer Forgotten Voice (barrier 7), Peter Moody-trained Sneak A Peek (barrier 17) and exciting mare Oasis Bloom as the remaining emergencies searching for a run in the Group 1 event.
