2013 Snowhite Maintenance Classic Field – Thousand Guineas Day Races

This Wednesday, October 16, Caulfield Racecourse will come to life for Thousand Guineas Day with the final fields now out for all eight races on the card including the Snowhite Maintenance Classic 2013.

The only other Group status race on the program, this year’s $135,000 Snowhite Maintenance Classic (1600m) has drawn a final field of 14 mares.

Formerly known as the Ladies Day Vase, the set weights plus penalties clash is a nice black type for the ladies just off the top mares of the season.

It could also work as a nice lead-up run for milers heading towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington during next month’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Heading the field and weights with 59kg is the David Hayes-trained Unchain My Heart who is first-up for the season and will jump from gate two with Chad Schofield aboard.

A veteran Al Maher seven-year-old, Unchain My Heart was in top form during the winter including her Andrew Ramsden Stakes win over the two miles at Flemington, and her fourth to Peal Of Bells in the Stayers Cup over the same distance in Sydney.

She’s a dour stayer however and first-up the mile is likely to be a bit sharp.

Hayes will also saddle-up his Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Alzora in barrier six who was outclassed against better company during the autumn and first-up in the Group 2 Lets Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington when 14th (of 16) to Commanding Jewel.

She dropped back in class at Caulfield last start and finished a brave fourth to Notice Received, Andrew Noblet’s O’Reilly mare also backing up on Wednesday, in a similar condition non-black type over 1400m on September 29.

The next most experienced in the field is then the Pat Hyland-trained Bonaria in gate 10, the Let’s Elope fourth placegetter out to bounce back after her distant second last (15th) behind Rebel Dane in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).

Mares coming off some decent recent runs meanwhile include Minnie Downs who was a first-up third in a mares’ handicap here on September 21, Goldslick for Michael Kent and Brett Prebble’s mount Godspiel with the rails run as they vie for back-to-back wins over the mile.

Other notable hopes then include Two Sugars for Matt Laurie and the Peter Moody-trained Queensland Oaks runner-up Miss Zenella.
