Today, Saturday October 12, the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival action steps up another level for 2013 Caulfield Guineas Day – our best bets of the day found below so you can enjoy a winning day on the punt.
There are 10 big races on the Caulfield race card today, the action kicking off at 12:15pm (AEST) with the $120,000 Listed Inglis Debutant Stakes (1000m).
All but one of the races hold black type status.
The exception is the lucrative $250,000 Blue Sapphire (1200m) for three-year-olds, which is being groomed for a Group 1 upgrade in the future.
One of the major support races outside the triple shot of Group 1 action on the program will be the $220,000 Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m), Race 8, the winner of which will enjoy a 2013 Caulfield Cup ballot exemption.
The first of the Group 1’s meanwhile is earlier in the day, Race 6 at 3:10pm (AEST) featuring just five hopes with Atlantic Jewel odds-on to take her Group 1 tally to four in the $400,000 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).
The milers then face off in Race 9 at 4:55pm (AEST) with the likes of the reigning champ Solzhenitsyn, Stradbroke winner Linton and the flying Speediness facing off in the $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
The big one on the card is then saved until the last with the three-year-olds coming head-to-head for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at 5:45pm (AEST).
Favourite is Peter Snowden’s Henry Bucks Best Dressed winner Long John on the rails, but they face a tough field including the two that beat them home in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude last start Éclair Big Bang and the lightly-raced El Roca.
As you can see there’s a race for everyone at Caulfield today and it should be an absolute cracker day’s betting.
So to make sure you finish in the red below are our Caulfield Guineas Day best bets, who you should back and who you should sack across the bumper 10-race card!
In The Big One – Race 10 – Caulfield Guineas
#1 Dissident ($16 DTO)
Favourite is Long John but we think this market mover is worth the betting plunge coming for them. Prepared by Peter Moody they were a brave second to Zoustar, who won the Roman Consul and is on track for the Coolmore, in the Golden Rose over 1400m two back. Went up in distance and class then against the older horses in the Group 1 George Main (1600m) at Randwick and did well to run sixth to Streama under WFA. Back against their own age here and should really thrive. Don’t forget too that only Ladbrokes.com.au are offering DOUBLE THE ODDS on the Caulfield Guineas so instead of $8, you can back Dissident to win at a juicy $16!
Best Roughie Bet – Race 6 – Caulfield Stakes
#5 Super Cool ($5.50)
Okay, so $5.50 isn’t exactly a roughie but when there’s a $1.35 odds-on favourite in the mix it is! We are tipping a major Caulfield Stakes upset and saying the other Mark Kavanagh-trained Group 1 winner in his Cox Plate lead-up will get the bikkies. Atlantic Jewel is the deserving favourite, she’s nine from 10 and a triple Group 1 winner. But Super Cool has to be one of the most underrated horses getting around. Winner of the Australian Cup last season, think there’s massive improvement in them from last start and that over the 2000m he could surprise.
