Complacent had all the favours during the run, travelling beautifully just off the pace, and showed impressive sustained acceleration to hit the front with 300 metres left to run; holding off a fast finishing Criterion and favourite Savvy Nature to record his maiden Group 1 win in just fifth race start.

Complacent came from a maiden at Hawkesbury to win the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at his last start and trainer Peter Snowden said after the race that it has been remarkable how far the horse has come in a short period of time.

“I think he won a maiden at Hawkesbury only two starts ago so it has been a tremendous effort,” Snowden said.

“He is a talented horse, he got the gun run and it was a great ride; it was a very pleasing effort.”

Snowden said he is wary about asking too much of a horse that has only had five career starts but believes the son of Authorized still has plenty of improvement left in him and is good enough to be competitive in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

“I think that you have to let the horse tell you what to do,” Snowden said.

“He is a talented horse, there is no doubt he can stay, but he is still very raw and there is lot of improvement left in the horse.

“He will make a lovely autumn three-year-old but Group 1s are great to win and the Derby is just around the corner.

“We will certainly give it a lot of thought.”

Jockey Christian Reith gave the three-year-old a flawless ride and the rising jockey was clearly delighted to record his second ever Group 1 win and his first in New South Wales.

“I was blotting the whole way and I knew that I will be after I worked him on Tuesday morning,” Reith said.

“I had a lapful of horse coming around the corner and I pushed the button and away he went.

“It feels awesome to get one in Sydney, especially Peter and Darley and the whole team.

“We work hard together, we’ve had a  bit of a lean run lately, and it is great to be back on top.”
