2013 Spring Champion Stakes Betting Update

While the season’s three-year-old milers are facing off in Melbourne today for the 2013 Caulfield Guineas, over in Sydney the Group 1 racing action for the spring comes to a close with the Spring Champion Stakes 2013.

Running as Randwick Race 6 t 4:02pm (AEST) there are 14 hopefuls set to face off in this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), the favourite of which is Savvy Nature.

John O’Shea’s 2013 Victoria Derby-bound son of Savabeel has been sitting at $3.50 in the Spring Champion Stakes betting markets over the past week, steady money trickling in for them to win their first Group 1 today.

They enjoyed a Group 3 victory at start number four two back at Newcastle over the mile before their close second in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1200m) last start.

The horse that beat them home by a neck in the Gloaming, Complacent, is also backing up in today’s elite level.

The Peter Snowden-trained galloper is after their third on the trot and is set to get another gun run from the inside alley and occupies the second line of betting at a steady $4.80.

The genuine market mover then is the $5 third elect Rock Hero in from $5.50.

David Payne’s in-form Fastnet Rock colt put six and a half lengths on their rivals two back at Canterbury over the 1550m then easily made the step up to the mile again to win the Listed Dulcify Quality at Randwick last Saturday.

They’re on a short seven day back-up but the punters don’t seem to mind and are getting behind them for an upset here.

Spring Champion Stakes odds have then eased on most of the other major players including the Anthony Cummings-trained Drago ($7 out to $8) and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Equator ($12 out to $14) making now the time to get behind them if you fancy for a nice value bet.
