2013 Caulfield Guineas Day Scratchings & Track Report

Today Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse will host the latest Group 1 meet of the spring with Caulfield Guineas Day 2013 with only one of the three elite levels on the card having suffered an early withdrawal.

Green Moon

Green Moon out of the Caulfield Stakes is the only notable Group 1 Caulfield Guineas Day scratching.

That is Caulfield Race 6 – the $400,000 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) with #1 Green Moon coming out yesterday.

Winner of last year’s Melbourne Cup, the Cox Plate-bound Green Moon is suffering from a virus and had been ruled out of a run today.

That leaves a diminutive field of just five horses, the odds-on favourite of which is Mark Kavanagh’s triple Group 1 winning mare Atlantic Jewel ($1.35).

The next Group 1 on the card is Race 9 at 4:55pm (AEST) where a big 17-horse field, including the defending champ and $6 favourite to go back-to-back Solzhenitsyn ($6), will face off in the $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).

Rounding out the elite levels is then the race everyone will be waiting around to see, the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) bringing things to a close as Race 10 at 5:45pm (AEST).

Fourteen class three-year-olds are set to square off in the Caulfield Guineas field, all of which are available at DOUBLE their fixed win odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au today.

That means the Peter Snowden-trained favourite Long John, third in the Prelude last time out, can be found at a juicy $8.

Or their last start conquerors Éclair Big Bang (Prelude winner) and El Roca (Prelude runner-up) at juicy prices of $17 and $14 respectively.
