A big day’s racing is scheduled for Caulfield this Saturday, and while it’s not one of the three Group 1 races on the program, there will be plenty of attention on the 2013 Herbert Power Stakes.
One of the final two races offering a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption to the winner, the $220,000 Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) is set to run as Caulfield Guineas Day Race 8 at 4:20pm (AEST).
Originally the handicap clash drew a final field of 11 stayers, but there are just 10 left in contention following the early withdrawal of #7 Motivado.
Leading the Herbert Power Stakes odds at a quote of $3.70 is the Lloyd Williams-owned Sea Moon who will carry the 59.5kg top-weight with Hugh Bowman aboard.
Not only does the Beat Hollow stallion have the top-weight to overcome here, they are also on a short seven-day back-up having run in the Listed The Bart Cummings (2500m) last Saturday with 60kg on their back.
They were first across the line too, seemingly on track for a shot at the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 19.
However a protest from second past the post Araldo and their hoop Glen Boss saw Sea Moon stripped of the win and regulated for second, now in danger of missing a Caulfield Cup run if they don’t win on Saturday.
Hot on their heels in the Herbert Power Stakes betting markets at $3.90 is then the Peter Moody-trained Kesampour who meets them a full five kilos better in the weights.
This French import last ran on September 21 and finished a brave second to Mr O’Ceirin in the Naturalism Stakes (2000m) after jumping from the outside barrier (16 of 16).
They have gate two here, with Luke Nolen staying on, and look in an ideal position to improve on their last run and post their first win down under for Moody.
The other single figure fancies are then William Mullins’ Irish raider Simenon ($5.50) last seen running second in the Lonsdale Cup over 3300m at York in August and the Nigel Blackiston-trained Red Ransom mare Let’s Make Adeal ($7.50).
So when it comes to placing your Herbert Power Stakes bets are these the ones to back?
Or is there value to be found further down the markets from a horse like early market mover Oasis Bloom ($10) or even last year’s Zipping Classic winner Tanby ($14) looking to return to form after some disappointing runs this time in.
Herbert Power Stakes Trifecta Tip
#2 Simenon ($5.50) from #4 Kesampour ($3.90) and #1 Sea Moon ($3.70)
Seven-year-old raider is fresh off a seven week break, Kerrin McEvoy to ride, and really fancy the European form to stack up here as it so often does this time of week. Good fresh record, and their head away second in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup was a cracker, it’ll be a bit short for him (first time over this short a trip in 19 starts) but think they can still get the job done. Kesampour’s French form is all class and is a big chance from the inside draw where they’ll likely go forward. Sea Moon and Bowman should make a perfect pair here too and think they’ll challenge again with the Caulfield Cup dream on the line.
