Missy Longstocking is the top-rated acceptor for the Thoroughbred Club Stakes 2013 which kicks off Group racing in Melbourne on Saturday for Caulfield Guineas Day.
Set to run as Caulfield Race 2 at 12:50pm (AEST) this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) has drawn a final field of 11 three-year-old fillies.
In the mix are all the classy short distance types not suited to the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) over more distance at the same track Saturday week.
Still, the fillies that run in Saturday’s race as opposed to the Thousand Guineas could still prove themselves at Group 1 level during the spring with the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) against the boys at Flemington on Derby Day, November 2, a viable option.
Heading the Thoroughbred Club Stakes field this year is the Liam Birchley-trained Missy Longstocking.
The Brisbane-based daughter of Sequalo is already a four time stakes winner, including the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) back in December, and comes off a last start victory when winning over 1000m at Eagle Farm first-up on September 28.
There are two other last start winners in the mix too with the Robert Smerdon-trained Anatina (barrier four) and Sense Of Hite (barrier seven).
Fastnet Rock three-year-old Anatina was a first-up winner as the odds-on favourite at Geelong last month and then ran again at Flemington last Saturday to score a narrow win in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1000m), her first stakes victory in a short four start career to date.
The other highly rated hope after Missy Longstocking meanwhile is the Peter Snowden-trained Montsegur.
The daughter of New Approach has raced against the best of this crop, including her sixth to Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in February.
She’s also a Group 3 winner having won the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Flemington in March.
This time in she’s produced three solid runs including a third to Thump in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and a last start fourth to Gregers in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m).
Other big name trainers with a Thoroughbred Club Stakes representative include David Hayes with the always honest Bulbula, Michael Kent and his black Husson filly The Huntress, and Gai Waterhouse saddling up Cosmic Endeavour who was last seen running fourth in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
