Platelet has won the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes at Flemington Racecourse today October 5, 2013.
The five-year-old won the race by almost a length in front of a gallant Spirit Of Boom, who finished second, and Steps In Time, who placed in third.
Platelet has now won eight of her 21 race starts and has taken her career earnings to more than $1.08 million in prize money.
The Strategic mare was second-up for today’s 2013 Gilgai Stakes after placing fourth in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley last start.
Trainer Darren Weir was pleased to see his two time Group 1 winning mare back in the winner’s circle for the spring.
“She was great,” Weir said.
“Once she got her back in behind them she travelled beautifully and let down really well.
“She gives 110% every time she goes out.”
Weir revealed that Platelet will now go to the Group 1 Manikato Stakes on October 26, followed by the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic on November 9, 2013.
“They’ve been the two goals since she’s come in if she’s going good enough,” Weir said.
“I think she’s worthy of a spot there.”
Regular jockey Ben Melham is currently suspended, which allowed Michelle Payne to pick up the ride.
“It’s a very nice feeling,” Payne said.
She admitted that keeping her position aboard Platelet would most likely prove impossible going into the Group 1 features.
“I think Benny might be trying to get his position back on the horse,” she said.
