Fire Up Fifi Blazing Toward Myer Classic 2013 – Turnbull Stakes Day Results

Rob Heathcote’s visiting Brisbane-based mare Fire Up Fifi scored an upset in the last on Turnbull Stakes Day in Melbourne this afternoon running a lovely 2013 Myer Classic lead-up with her win in the $220,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m).

Taking on a smart field of fellow mares in the last at Flemington the Bradbury’s Luck six-year-old was second-up for the season following a disappointing first-up 12th in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m).

Going up in distance today however suited the stakes winning miler with Fire Up Fifi able to take out the Blazer Stakes as a $21 outsider.

There was some money on her however as she’d been backed late on track from $31, and she saluted for those late punters.

It looked to be the well supported favourite Peron who had the Blazer Stakes in the bag, John Thompson’s Husson mare having run second in the Sheraco, with a patient ride from Nash Rawiller up front.

She’d had a bit of a tough ride up until that point too sitting fourth out wide before the swing for home where she worked down the outside to put herself at the top of the field and leading towards the lien.

However Rawiller may have held back on the Husson four-year-old a little too long because when he saw the grey flash of Fire Up Fifi storming home, Peron didn’t respond fast enough to hold off the late comer.

On the line Fire Up Fifi had just a neck to spare over the punters’ pick Peron while a brave Chris Waller-trained Catkins, last start winner of the How Now Stakes at Caulfield, held on for third a further three quarters of a length away having sat up in the top half of the field throughout.

Heathcote’s stable hand Melissa Lynch was pleased with today’s Blazer Stakes result and said it was now all systems go to the Melbourne Cup Carnival where they would run Fire Up Fifi in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) back at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday November 2.

“The concern today was always the barrier (16 of 16),” Lynch said on TVN post-win.

“But it was a great ride….very happy.

“It was a bit of a step up in class for her (today) but she handled it so we’re going for the Myer Classic which is our ultimate goal.”
