While Guleph cemented her position as the Thousand Guineas 2013 favourite with a commanding Fight Stakes success in Sydney today, another fillies’ race that could have an impact on the Group 1 in Melbourne ran at Flemington with Se Sauver winning the $220,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m).
While the Edward Manifold Stakes winner was impressive, they still look to be little match for Guelph who is already a dual Group 1 winner over the mile going into the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) on Wednesday week, October 16.
But the 2013 Thousand Guineas is where young Mornington-based trainer Matt Laurie plans to take his Bel Esprit filly Se Sauver after she won today in a photo result.
“We’re pretty confident in this horse,” Laurie said on TVN after the win.
“She’s run a good race every single start with no luck but she was well and truly a good shot today and it’s just a great result.”
In a race where there were around eight livewire chances across heading down the straight, it was Se Sauvier and David Hayes’ last start Morphettville Guineas runner-up Star Fashion who pulled away from the pack with 200m left to travel fighting it out stride-for-stride.
The bob went Se Sauvier’s way however, much to the surprise of her young hoop Damian Lane who thought he’d been beaten.
“I honesty thought…they got the better of me,” he said.
“She is determine, and she’s been without luck especially her last run was a catastrophe.
“But I was very optimistic coming into today…she just needed the right luck in running.”
Two lengths further back in third completing the Edward Manifold Stakes trifecta was then Solicit who made up lots of ground down the outside in a good run from a long way back.
Having always displayed plenty of promise, Se Sauver had been luckless in her earlier starts with Laurie having to go to Pakenham last month in a 1300m maiden to get her a win, which she did.
“Yeah, not ideal (having to go to Pakenham) but we wanted to get a kill,” he said.
Last start she went to the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) but after getting caught well back could only manage to finish sixth to Gregers.
Still Laurie thought that was a cracking effort, her smart sectionals telling a different story to the official placing.
“Her run last start was phenomenal, her sectionals were fantastic,” he said.
She then rewarded her trainer’s faith then on Turnbull Stakes Day this afternoon.
“The big track today was always going to suit,” Laurie said.
Following the Thousand Guineas, so long as all is well with the filly, Laurie will press onto the Melbourne Cup Carnival for a crack at the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on Thursday November 7.
“We’ll certainly be going to the Thousand Guineas,” he said.
“If she’s sound and well then we’ll go to the Oaks.”
