2013 Epsom Handicap Results – Boban Wins In Thrilling Finish

Enigmatic gelding Boban overcame a troublesome run to fly home and win the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) in a photo finish from Streama at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Boban was ridden at the tail of the field by jockey Glyn Schofield and got caught up badly at the 1000 metre mark but showed an amazing turn-of-foot in the final stages of the race to run down a brave Streama who was narrowly denied her fourth Group 1 victory.

The Bernardini gelding joined the stable of Chris Waller at the end of last year and the leading trainer has done a remarkable job turning the inconsistent galloper into a Group 1 winner.

Waller was clearly relived that Boban had claimed his maiden Group 1 victory and believes that the four-year-old is finally starting to mature as a racehorse.

“It was a tough couple of minutes but it was worth the wait,” Waller said.

“He had an awkward gate and Glyn got a long way back and still got into a little bit of trouble but he did get the horse to settle.

“What we are starting to see it that he does have an amazing finish and he is starting to put it together as a racehorse.

“We stuck to our guns and continue riding him quiet and he managed to get a little bit of confidence out of that plus his bodies changed so he has confidence in himself now.”

Schofield admitted that everything did not go to plan during the running of the race but said that he was full of confidence once the exciting gelding found clear running down the outside of the field.

“Early on I had Your Honour all over me and was a thorn in my side; wherever I wanted to go he got there first,” Schofield said.

“He travelled well and when they steadied up midrace he got on the bridle and I thought oh no and Jimmy Cassidy went around me and fired he up as well.

“Fortunately I got on the back of Jimmy and he sucked me right into the race.

“At the top of the hill I popped him out and I thought I was going to win by a length but he just got there.

“I thought he was going to get there but on the line I wasn’t really sure so I was very happy to see the number go up.”
