2013 Epsom Handicap Tips & Exotic Selections

On Saturday a super field of milers is set to square off in Sydney’s Epsom Handicap 2013, tips for the big one at Royal Randwick detailed below for Races.com.au fans.

Streama

This year’s $500,000 Group 1 The Star Epsom (1600m) is scheduled as the seventh race on a crack nine-race card, jumping at 4:05pm (AEST).

Two gallopers are now installed at the top of the Epsom Handicap odds with Guy Walter’s easing Cameron Handicap winner Toydini and the in-form Chris Waller-trained Boban both now paying $5 to win.

There are plenty of other livewire chances at both similar and much juicer prices including Toydini’s triple Group 1 winning stable mate Streama ($6.50), as well as Boban’s two stable mates in Theo Marks champ Riva De Lago ($17) and reigning Doncaster hero Sacred Falls ($12).

So who are we tipping? One of the single figure fancies? Or an outsider for an upset Epsom Handicap result?

1st

#5 Streama ($6.50)

Think the bookies have the wrong Walter runner short in these markets and are tipping Streama to overcome a number of hoodoos and score her fourth Group 1. This five-year-old daughter of Stratum scored Group 1 win number three (her first against the boys) last start with a tight victory in the George Main Stakes over this track and distance. The George Main has produced four of the past 10 Epsom winners so she’s got the best lead-up form. Also has the best record over the Randwick mile (3-2-0-0) – which could be key and loves the track (6-4-0-0). Mares don’t have a great Epsom record but she’s flying not having finished worse than fourth since March. In double digits but wider gates don’t count for much in this race so think she’ll overcome that.

2nd

#10 Boban ($5)

Waller’s inform four-year-old is also firing at the right time and looks set to step up in class here. Comes off back-to-back wins, most recently a Group 3 here from September 21, so will be third-up like last year’s winner Fat Al was 12 months ago, where he put an easy four lengths on his rivals. Favourites don’t have a great winning record in recent times, but only three in the past 10 years have finished out of the money making them great Place bets. He’s got a really impressive turn of foot and will come close especially with just 53kg on their back.

3rd

#4 Rekindled Interest ($17)

Quite fancy Jim Conlan’s 2011 Cox Plate minor place getter to get back to that type of class, the now six-year-old flying under the radar a bit here. In top form in the spring two years back, and had a solid autumn last year. Things went amiss 12 months ago however and out to atone for that this season. First-up effort was a good one too when second to Le Bonsir in a Listed Moonee Valley sprint carrying a hefty 61kg. Drop back to 55.5kg for this which is going to do them a whole heap of favours, as will their ideal barrier four draw.

Roughie We Like

#1 Sincero ($41)

Carries the 58kg topweight but has a nice draw (5) and could surprise. In their prime won the 2011 George Main Stakes, but Epsom wasn’t their race that year when eighth to Secret Admirer. Has been hit and miss since with a number of highs (Doncaster fourth to more Joyous last year) and lows. Has had two runs this time in which on paper look poor (13th in Tramway and 8th in George Main) however they were beaten four lengths or under with chance of improvement.
