Despite drawing awkwardly for their big Group 1 Sydney Spring Racing Carnival assignment on Saturday, the Guy Walter-trained Toydini remains top of the 2013 Epsom Handicap odds.
The consistent Bernardini four-year-old is one of 17 chances in this year’s $500,000 Group 1 The Star Epsom (1600m), running as Royal Randwick Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST).
Last start winner of the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle, which has proved a valuable Epsom Handicap guide in the past, Toydini shot to the top of the Epsom Handicap odds after that effort.
They have retained favouritism too, now at a quote of $4.80, following the Epsom Handicap barrier draw on Wednesday which saw them draw gate 14.
A wider barrier has not been a real hindrance when it comes to winning the mile classic however.
Toydini also overcame a wide gate 13 of 16 draw to win the Cameron when carrying 58kg.
They will advantage then going down to 55kg on the weekend with Blake Shinn retaining the ride, the hoop not at all fazed by their wide draw.
“I don’t think it (the barrier) poses us too much of a problem,” Shinn said on TVN yesterday.
“He’s proven he can run a strong mile … and has the ability to put a field away.”
Close second favourite in Epsom Handicap betting at $5.50 is then the Chris Waller-trained Boban.
Getting in on the 53kg minimum with Glyn Schofield to ride, Boban is another four-year-old son of Bernardini and vies for their third win on the trot.
In August they won over 1300m at Rosehill before coming to Randwick on September 21 where they scored a nice win over Belltone in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m).
In a tight market there are then two other single figure chances with Walter’s other representative Streama ($6.50) and early market mover Ecuador ($7.50).
Looking to break the hoodoo of mares in the Epsom, Stratum five-year-old Streama became a triple Group 1 winner when she took out the George Main Stakes over the testing Randwick mile, which she sees again here, last start.
The George Main was an excellent effort as she carried 57kg, Streama going back to 54.5kg here, and it was also the first time she scored an elite level against the boys with her opening two being in the 2012 ATC Oaks and 2011 Flight Stakes.
Ecuador meanwhile is one of three hopes for Gai Waterhouse who shoots for her eighth Epsom Handicap win, a feat that would see her surpass the record she currently co-holds with her late father TJ Smith.
Drawn poorly in barrier 13 with Tommy Berry to ride, the young High Chaparral gelding has been in top form but goes up considerably in class for this.
They do drop considerably in the weights and distance however after carrying 60kg over 1900m at Rosehill last Saturday giving them a genuine shot.
Other notable Epsom runners at longer odds out for an upset include Waller’s Doncster Mile champ Sacred Falls ($12), the Peter Moody-trained Lidari ($15) coming off a close third in the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes, Rekindled Interest ($17) and last start Theo Marks Stakes winner Riva De Lago ($17).
