Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
John Thompson’s promising mare Peron may have missed a Group 1 run in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes last weekend, but she gets her chance jumping as the punters’ pick in this Saturday’s 2013 Blazer Stakes at Flemington.
The last event on a huge 10 race card in Melbourne, this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m) has drawn a full field of mares.
Early favourite of those is Husson four-year-old Peron currently paying $3.80 to post her seventh win from 10 starts.
She was regulated to emergency status and failed to gain a start at Caulfield in the big one last Saturday and will find this race much easier than a run against an open-sex, elite level field would have been there.
Peron resumed on September 14 when second to Driefontein in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m), an effort she is tipped to improve on getting a little more distance here.
Four of Peron’s Blazer Stakes rivals then join her under double figures in betting with:
- #6 Catkins ($5) – Talented Chris Waller-trained grey has done nothing wrong this year including her good Group 3 How Now Stakes win over 1200m at Caulfield last start, before that she was second to Commanding Jewel over the 1400m at Flemington so could be hard to beat with the right run especially under set weights with 56.5kg.
- #2 Flying Snitzel ($8) – Kewney winner over this track and distance in March, returned with a fifth in the Sheraco Stakes, better in Melbourne over the 1400m so watch out for a big run
- #10 A Time For Julia ($8.50) – Peter Moody-trained Redoute’s Choice four-year-old ran third in the Let’s Elope before her How Now fifth which she’ll be out to improve on and should do as the 1200m was likely a little short coming back to it
- #5 Hi Belle ($9) – How Now runner-up has great form up to a mile here, seven-year-old but racing with the zest of mares half her age and expect her to bring it again here with Flemington to suit
Others that are in with a shot at juicer prices then include last start Caulfield winner Mybenz ($13) rising in class here, Shaune Ritchie’s Gold Coast visitor Zurella ($17) first-up here and the David Hayes-trained Red Fez ($17).
