Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Unsurprisingly Chris Waller’s last start Golden Rose hero Zoustar has opened the short-priced favourite for their next run when they take on a diminutive field in Randwick’s Roman Consul Stakes 2013 on Saturday.
The talented Northern Meteor colt hit the big time on September 14 with their good win from the outside gate (16 of 16) in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.
That was Zoustar’s fourth career win from six starts, their other major achievements being their Group 2 BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) win in May followed by their close second to Romantic Touch in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) as a juvenile in Brisbane.
Stepping back down in distance on the weekend, Zoustar’s fitness and speed will be tested in the $175,000 Group 2 Sydney City Toyota Roman Consul Stakes (1200m).
The bookies are tipping it won’t be much of a test for the up-and-comer however with Zoustar at a short $1.90 in Roman Consul Stakes betting.
Someone else brimming with confidence is their regular rider Jim Cassidy.
Cassidy turned down a ride in Melbourne’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes on Saturday to stay in Sydney and continue his association with Zoustar who he has a very high opinion of.
There are then three other single-figure three-year-olds in the Roman Consul Stakes markets with:
#3 Barbed ($5) – Peter Snowden-trained Canny Lad gelding is undefeated to date with two wins, most recently a good effort to take out the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) here at Randwick on September 21
#2 Va Pensiero ($7) – Class Stratum colt prepared in Sydney by Jason Coyle, dual Group 3 winner in August with their San Domenico Stakes – Run To The Rose double, won the second of those as a $31 outsider defeating subsequent Golden Rose runner-up Dissident (2nd) and winner Zoustar (3rd), latest run was fourth in the Heritage with step back up in distance to suit here
#5 Open Book ($7.50) – Son of Shamardal prepared in Broadmeadow, won opening two starts at Newcastle then Gosford before their second to odds-on favourite Aussies Love Sport in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Randwick at the start of last month
And the best of the roughies? The Paul Messara-trained Havana is nicely drawn in gate two paying $16 while at $31 the roughie of the field Mr Jackman vies for their third straight win.
