Premiere Stakes Field 2013 – Hay List Runs Again

Connections of veteran warhorse Hay List are not giving up on the dream of having the multiple Group 1 champ return to the winner’s stall before retirement, the eight-year-old set to run on Epsom Handicap Day in the Premiere Stakes 2013.

Plagued by injury and illness over their 27-start career that started in WA, the John McNair-trained Statue Of Liberty gelding is the top-rated galloper in a full 16-starter field for the $200,000 Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

In their prime Hay List recorded three elite level wins, and would likely have recorded a few more if they hadn’t run into the freakishly talented Black Caviar.

However the past year and a half has produced nothing of note with Hay List’s last win being in the 2012 Newmarket Handicap.

Their most recent run was a second-up 11th in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick where they beat home just one other runner on September 21.

Still McNair and the horse’s Perth-based owners continue with the horse’s spring campaign, Hay List jumping from a horror barrier 14 draw in the Premiere Stakes.

The only Premiere Stakes acceptors coming off a top four finish this season then are the Gai Waterhouse-trained Knight Exemplar (barrier 1) stepping up in class here and Hidden Warrior to be ridden by gun jockey Jim Cassidy from gate three.

Hidden Dragon four-year-old Hidden Dragon was a dual Rosehill winner during the winter and resumed with a good fourth in The Shorts as a $31 outsider, their price on Saturday sure to be much shorter.

Decision Time is also worth a note as the Clarry Conners-trained Foreplay six-year-old won the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) over Sessions first-up before their fifth to the same horse who turned the tables in The Shorts.

The bulk of the other hopefuls are all resuming here so first-up records could be crucial when it comes to Premiere Stakes betting this year.

Among some of the more notable chances that will be out to run well fresh are the Chris Waller-trained trio of Group 1 performer Dystopia, consistent grey mare Arinosa and She’s Clean racing for the first time since her fifth to stable mate Red Tracer in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara in Brisbane back in June – drawn in gates one, 12 and eight respectively.

Also with three runners is Peter Snowden saddling up his returning Lonhro eight-year-old Pinwheel, Hawkesbury Guineas winner Limes and Commands gelding Rarefied.
