This Saturday a field of promising three-year-old fillies is set to face off at Flemington Racecourse as part of a huge 10-race Turnbull Stakes Day program in the 2013 Edward Manifold Stakes.
Scheduled as Flemington Race 7, the same track and race number as the world famous Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November, at 3:45pm (AEST), this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) has drawn a final field of 11 hopefuls.
Many of them will be using the Melbourne run as a lead-up to the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on Wednesday October 16.
The shortest priced of the Edward Manifold Stakes fillies in the futures markets for the Thousand Guineas is the Robert Smerdon-trained Politeness.
Paying $6 in early betting to upset dual Group 1 winner Guelph ($2.90) in the Group 1 later in the month, the daughter of Street Sense has been in top form this time in.
She won her first-up race by six lengths at Sale in August before another win this time over 1313m at Seymour in September.
Last start Politeness ran a great race when beaten under a length by Gregers in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m).
Smerdon will also saddle-up his Not A Single Doubt filly Every Faith who has been racing well against this class over the past month.
There are then two last start winners in the Edward Manifold Stakes mix on the weekend with Solicit and Metaphorical drawn in barriers eight and 11 respectively.
Due to be ridden by reigning Melbourne Cup winning jockey Brett Prebble, Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra’s Street Cry filly Solicit has won back-to-back races this time in at Ballarat and then Moonee Valley.
The Peter Moody-trained Metaphorical meanwhile is also after her third on the trot looking to keep her perfect record intact having won her opening two career starts to date at Cranbourne (1400m) and then Bendigo (1500m) last month.
A number of other up-and-coming fillies also ran cracking lead-up races to the Edward Manifold including the Anthony Cummings-trained Wordplay who was a brave second to Savvy Nature in the Newcastle Spring Stakes last start and David Hayes’ Morphettville Guineas runner-up Star Fashion.
Also in the mix are the progressive Sebring grey Fantome Gris and Romantic Moon.
Drawn on the rails with barrier one and Nash Rawiller riding, John O’Shea’s More Than Ready filly Romantic Moon is a Group 3 winner having won the Sweet Embrace Stakes over Thump back in March.
She’s run twice as a three-year-old running fifth to Bound For Earth then Guelph in the Group 2 Furious Stakes and Tea Rose in Sydney and should be one of the top fancies for Saturday in their Melbourne debut.
