Platelet Heads 2013 Gilgai Stakes Nominations

Darren Weir’s dual Group 1 winning mare Platelet heads a smart list of entries taken for the Gilgai Stakes 2013 which is one of the key support races on Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington on Saturday.

A total of 16 gallopers have been nominated for this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m), the top-rated of which is Strategic five-year-old Platelet.

The smart mare was in flying form last time in, her autumn – winter campaign culminating with a Group 1 winning double in Adelaide thanks to her success in the Robert Sangster Classic and The Goodwood.

She resumed for the spring on September 14 and ran a brave first-up fourth in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

Heading the Gilgai Stakes nominations numbers-wise with three entries is then Sydney’s Peter Snowden.

Snowden has entered Redoute’s Choice stallion Albrecht coming off a first-up third in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality at Flemington, resuming Group 2 QTC Cup winner Galah and Sessions.

Consistent Lonhro four-year-old Sessions has had two big runs this time in, returning to the nice form that saw them win Sydney sprints in both January and June.

First-up they finished second to Decision Time in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick and then they returned to the track on September 21 to win the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m).

The Shorts runner-up Aeronautical is also nominated for the Gilgai Stakes on Saturday but is a dual nominee entered for the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) in Sydney on the same day.

Other notable Gilgai Stakes entries include the consistent John Thompson-trained eighty-year-old Griffon, stakes winning six-year-old Pago Rock and in-form Queenslander Spirit Of Boom.

Fourth in both the Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Tony Gollan’s Sequalo stallion returned in The Shorts and finished a brave third getting their chance to turn the tables on Saturday.

See below for the full Gilgai Stakes 2013 nominations and stay tuned for the final field released on Wednesday.
