Moody Takes on Turnbull Stakes 2013 Bookies with Manighar

They currently sit as the second longest-priced horse to win the 2013 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Saturday but Manighar is a genuine shot at the title according to their trainer Peter Moody.

The official field for the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) will be released on Wednesday, but early pre-acceptance markets are already going off at online bookmakers around the country.

Turnbull Stakes betting is led by the likes of Melbourne Cup-bound Puissance De Lune, last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente and the Chris Waller-trained George Main Stakes second placed Royal Descent.

While those three along with Mark Kavanagh’s Group 1 winner Super Cool and early Caulfield Cup favourite Hawkspur are all under $10, Manighar can be found right down the markets at $67.

He is ahead of only triple figure outsider and unlikely runner Tuscan Fire ($201).

Moody though thinks his horse is way over the odds and thinks they’re in the right form for a brave showing on Saturday.

The Linamix seven-year-old has had two runs this spring at Group 1 level and has been just off the top finishers.

First-up they were three and a half lengths away sixth to Foreteller in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) before they stepped up to 1800m at Caulfield on September 21 when just over a length away fifth to It’s A Dundeel in the Underwood.

While they haven’t won a race since last year’s The BMW, Manighar has been thereabouts over the past year and a half including their close fourth in the Doomben Cup in Brisbane during the winter.

Two years ago they were the country’s premier weight-for-age stayer winning four of their opening five starts for Moody since being transferred from the European stables of Luca Cumani.

The most notable of those wins was of course The BMW which was their third Group 1 on the trot following the Australian Cup in Melbourne and Rosehill’s Ranvet Stakes.

Moody isn’t saying Manighar can get back to that red hot form but he does expect them to run well in the Turnbull after they worked nicely in a mile gallop at Caulfield this morning.
