2013 Caulfield Guineas Prelude Results – Eclair Big Bang Finishes Strongly To Claim Victory

Eclair Big Bang will head into the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) as one of the favourites after he upset Long John to win the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude(1400m) this afternoon.

The Savabeel gelding was given a tremendous ride by jockey Dom Tourneur and finished over the top of El Roca, who was having his first start in Australia, with an impressive staying effort that indicates he should have no trouble running out the mile of the Caulfield Guineas in a fortnights time.

Trainer Phillip Stokes has had a big opinion of Eclair Big Bang ever since he started his racing career with two comfortable victories at Morphettville but believes that the three-year-old still has plenty of improvement in front if him.

‘We brought him along slowly and his fitness is getting there,” Stokes said after the race.

“He still has to learn how to relax a little bit better but the two weeks into the Guineas will be better than the three weeks leading into this.

“I think he is still a preparation away to be honest with you but we will press on to the Guineas after that.”

Tourneur admitted that he doubted whether Eclair Big Bang would be able to run out a strong mile in the lead-up to this afternoon’s race but now believes that the lightly-raced gelding can be competitive in the Caulfield Guineas.

“Obviously it was a good group of gallopers and he put them away well today,” Tourneur said.

“I was always concerned about getting the mile of the Guineas with this horse but today after 500 metres I was happy because he let the nerves go and was calm.

“If he can switch off and let it go early I am sure that he will get the mile.

“He still wasn’t 100 percent fit today but I am sure that he will peak on Grand Final Day.”

Eclair Big Bang was priced at odds of $17 in Caulfield Guineas betting markets before this race and is expected to shorten considerably after this performance.
