Due to jump at 7:45pm (AEST) the $150,000 Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) is down to 10 runners following the early scratching of #10 Go Again.

Unsurprisingly Daniel Clarken’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner from February, Miracles Of Life, is the punters’ pick for this having been well supported in from $2.50 to $2.40.

She’ll be second-up here after a fourth upon returning against the boys in the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m), won by Fast ‘N’ Rocking, last month and fitter for that run.

Her main dangers in Champagne Stakes betting are perceived by the bookies to be the John Thompson-trained Silver Shadow Stakes winner Thump ($4.40 out to $4.80), Gai Waterhouse’s daughter of the ill-fated Northern Meteor Cosmic Endeavour ($8) and Tango’s Daughter ($8.50) who has won her last two starts.

She’s dominating the markets but is Miracles Of Life the filly we’re getting behind in our Champagne Stakes bets this evening?

#1 Miracles Of Life ($2.40)

Hard to tip against the reigning Blue Diamond winner who has been defeated just once in her five start career to date. Killing them at home including a nine length romp in Adelaide during the summer and her form held up in Melbourne. First-up fourth came off a six month break and was against some top Caulfield Guineas chances so the run was good. She hasn’t seen Moonee Valley so hard to say whether she’ll handle the tight turns, Stojakovic staying on, but she’s got the class and consistency plus improvement from the first run and comes back against her own kind.

#2 Ruud Awakening ($12)

Nice odds on this Kiwi filly who won an Ellerslie Group 1 by a good margin back in March. Her Golden Slipper 15th (of 16) in her down under debut wasn’t as bad as it looked either. Didn’t handle the Slow (7) track and had barrier 16 of 16. Resumed at Flemington with a first up fifth over 1100m, goes up here and that will suit, should get a lovely run from barrier two, comes back in weights and James McDonald stays on.

#4 Thump ($4.80)

This daughter of Red Ransom’s lead-up form is very good. She won the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) first-up at the Farm and then finished just a quarter length away third to Thousand Guineas fancies Bound For Earth and Guelph (a dual Group 1 winner) in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick. Needs to handle racing in Melbourne for the first time since her debut on Melbourne Cup Day last November but aside from that everything is spot on.
